A Moment in Aix - Travel Guide
Aix En Proenvnce is one of those places you have to visit at least once in your lifetime. Picture the most quaint south of France country experience. One filled with lavender, old beige stone houses, and a mix of farm life. It's an elegant old-money town tucked away in the rolling hills.
Well if you are as excited as I was about visiting Aix then you might enjoy this mini guide. So pack your bags and let's go!
While Aix might be known for lavender and very stylish shops there is a lot more to this countryside escape. The areas around Aix have some of the best hiking around, wineries, and horseback riding. The landscape is so different from most of France that it gives you a glimpse into the Mediterranean lifestyle.
Although we were only in Aix for 2 days, I look back on it I think that I would love to go back for longer. To enjoy all the peaceful moments and just sit by the pool relaxing.
Downtown is vibrant, old, and full of beauty. As you wander the streets you will notice shops, restaurants and so many other things to do. I will say this, to venture out of the center you will need a car. If you do not have access to a car I would recommend staying in downtown Aix. But if you do have one, then the world is your oyster and you can explore all of the countryside.
Where to stay:
While we stayed with a friend and also had access to a car I did see ways to make this trip possible without a local friend and a vehicle. There are many cute Airbnbs to be found and lots of lovely small hotels to stay in.
Mixed budget hotels:
Hôtel Escaletto Aix en Provence
Villa Saint-Ange, Hotel Luxury À Aix-En-Provence
Things to do by car:
Horseback Riding
Lavender Fields
Wineries
Hiking
Things I Loved:
I think what I loved most about this part of France is the peace and quiet. It's a country escape tucked away. In the center of town is a square where you will find so many cute cafes and restaurants. Aix is one of those places where you might not find as many tourists (as you would in Paris or Nice) so the food is more authentic. There is an amazing bakery called Farinoman Fou Aix. The bread is beyond perfect. I also really enjoyed Chocolaterie de Puyricard for their chocolates.
Of course, we ventured out horseback riding which I would say was pretty iconic in this landscape. I absolutely loved the country drive filled with blooming poppies. I would recommend if you have a car just drive about and explore the area. For us the weather was perfect. But we did go in late spring so I do imagine that it gets hotter in the summer months. So, be ready for that. Most of the South is used to hot weather and they create a beautiful lifestyle around it.
