Best Towns to Visit in England This Year
If you have travel on your mind as I know I do then you might be interested in this. I wanted to round up some of my favorite places to visit in England! As the weather has gotten warmer and spring is finally here. It’s the perfect time to start planning that weekend away if you live in Europe or that week-long trip for all my fellow USA friends.
I have personally been to most of these places but, one or two I have not yet. However, my friends keep on recommending those spots so I thought I would add them to this list!
York is a city in North Yorkshire, England. Farther north than most people explore when they stay around London, but it is worth the drive/train. It's the capital of the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire and it is overflowing with historical old buildings, streets, shops and so much more. If you think of the iconic Harry Potter or Shakespeare streets then this is the town for you.
Here are a few things to do while in York: The Shambles, Jorvik Viking Centre, York Minster, York museum gardens, York City Walls.
This city has been around for centuries. It was once an important Roman settlement, and it's still home to many historical sites like the Royal Crescent and Bath Abbey. Today, you can visit museums that showcase the city's past, but there are a lot of other things to do as well. Bath is also known for its architecture--its Georgian houses are some of the best examples in Britain! You'll want to spend some time exploring these beautiful homes while you're there. They were built during England's Regency period between 1710-1820.
I stumbled upon many lovely brunch spots and of course tons of small shops. There is a river that runs through the city and it’s a perfect spot for a walk.
In the sounding areas just a short car ride away are The Cotswolds, and many National Trust estates/gardens, Most famously is Prior Park Landscape known for its filming locations. I always think of Bath as being a quiet London, it’s very similar but tucked away in the countryside.
This has to be one of my favorite places to visit. The home of the university of Cambridge and It's actually only a 45 min train from London which makes it the perfect day trip spot. It feels as if you are bring transported back in time. Many tv shows have been shot here and I can understand why. The colleges are stunning and there is so much to do in this town. You can grab a bike and wander around or sit back on a boat ride along the river cam.
Side note: Some of the best gelato I've ever had was from a local shop in the town.
In the southwest of England. Cornwall is known for its dramatic coastline, Celtic heritage, and surfing beaches. The capital city is Truro, but there are several other places of interest to visit such as St Michael's Mount of Penzance and Land's End near Newquay. Another popular spot for the outdoorsy type. Who can resist a view of the ocean! Cornwall can easily go unnoticed but that doesn't mean it isn't worth visiting.
The Peak District is a national park in the UK that's located in Derbyshire, Staffordshire, and Cheshire. A car and train would be the best way of getting there as it is farther up north in England. It's an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) and is home to many rare species of animals and plants. If you are looking for an escape from city life the Peak District has many walking trails so it's great for those who love hiking!
Although there are so many more must-visit places in the country I wanted to share a few that were on the top of my list. I hope you enjoyed reading about them as much as I did writing about them.
